Oriental medicine (OM) nutrition combines ancient wisdom with modern science. OM nutrition is a holistic approach, which aims to balance all five flavors within most meals with one or two flavors being emphasized for therapeutic purposes. OM nutrition for a hypertension emphasizes bitter flavors, sour flavors and energetically-cooling foods.
OM theory states the bitter flavor benefits the heart in moderation but an excess is harmful as it has a drying effect; for example, coffee is bitter. In moderation coffee acts as vasodilator increasing circulation but in excess it can raise blood pressure and has a diuretic effect. Modern scientific research has discovered while the human genome has 25 bitter taste receptors 12 of these are expressed in the human heart.
Foods with bitter flavors include: romaine lettuce, dandelion, arugula, rye. Foods that combine bitter with pungency include: citrus peel, radish, scallion and white pepper. In OM nutrition the pungent flavor can help disperse phlegm (e.g. plaque). Foods that combine bitter with sweet include: asparagus, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, quinoa and papaya. Lemon rind is bitter and sour; vinegar is also bitter and sour.
Bitter flavors have a yin, or cooling effect, clearing heat in the body while encouraging a descent of Qi, which aids in the draining of fluids. For example, celery contains the phytochemical phthalides which relaxes arterial wall tissues to increase blood flow and thereby reduce blood pressure. The fiber, magnesium and potassium in celery also help lower blood pressure and regulate fluid balance. Caution: according to OM, those with a lot of dryness and/or bone disease should moderate their intake of bitter flavor.
A tomato a day keeps the doctor away! The combination of lycopene, vitamin C and E, potassium and folic acid in tomatoes make it a power food for heart health. The bitter flavor of tomatoes come from the seeds; to reap the full benefit of tomatoes eat the seeds too. Heirloom tomatoes in season have the most flavor, find the tastiest tomatoes at your farmer’s market or trying growing your own.
Summer is the season of the heart according to Chinese medicine, meaning it is the season most likely to bring our hearts out of balance if we are exposed to excess heat, which can then create and/or exacerbate internal heat. During the summer OM nutrition recommends drinking and eating foods that cool the body and heart such as green tea, cucumbers, watermelon and lemon.
Chrysanthemum tea is a very popular summertime tea in Asia because it is so well known for its cooling properties; it is helpful for headaches, dizziness, high blood pressure, chest pain and also fevers. You can add chrysanthemum flowers to your morning green tea and in the evening combine it with chamomile tea for extra cooling benefits!
OM nutrition cautions against overdoing cold foods and drinks. Too much cold inhibits the digestive process. Drinking warm beverages and soups, as well as eating foods with a little pungency (chili pepper, garlic, ginger) causes the body to perspire slightly which naturally cools the body.
For those who happen to have hypertension plus a lot of dryness: dry skin, dry eyes, dry mouth and thirst, constipation and even hormonal deficiencies can benefit from increasing their healthy fat intake. Many nutrients are fat soluble, the body uses cholesterol to make hormones, bile and vitamin D. Healthy fats nourish yin in OM nutrition theory. Some Americans who suffer from hypertension are also thin with an underlying yin deficiency, such as those with the onset of hypertension that coincides with menopausal symptoms. Sources of healthy fats include: nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, flaxseed oil and fish.
Eating beans, peas and grains are high in potassium, magnesium, fiber and are high in choline which is vital in lowering hypertension and boosting fat metabolism. Whole grains are also a good source of niacin and vitamin E and are recommended for healthy arteries, especially those that are slightly bitter such as: rye, quinoa, amaranth and oats.
K2 is the only nutrient in the world that will remove calcium from the arteries. K2 activates the matrix GLA protein (MGP) that removes calcium out of soft tissues like arteries and veins. The ten year, 4,800 subject Rotterdam Heart Study demonstrated that participants who ingested the greatest quantities of K2 experienced a 57% reduction in death from heart disease than people who ingested the least. DID YOU KNOW? There are over 25 published studies confirm that vitamin k2 can prevent arterial calcification, and those deficiencies are correlated with increased arterial calcification. Returning k2 levels to normal reverses arterial calcification, especially at prescriptive doses of 320mcg. MegaQuinone K2 -7 is the ONLY 320 mg pharmaceutical grade, all natural vitamin K2 with published safety studies. MegaQuinone is available at Carolina Holistic Health in Simpsonville SC. This along with some of the changes listed above can literally eliminate heart disease!
Thermography combined with routine blood work are an excellent diagnostic tools to consider using for the detection of inflammation in the arteries which can lead to blockages.
Exercise is also an important player in maintaining heart health. At Carolina Holistic Health we recommended 20-30 minutes a day of low impact exercise such as walking, hiking, biking, yoga, Tai Chi and swimming. Here is a helpful yoga pose:
Tree pose is a standard balancing pose that can be adapted based on your skill level. It focuses on the small intestine meridian and increases abdominal circulation. Tree pose can also calm and relax the mind and nervous system, bringing more self-awareness. To do this pose balance on your left leg, put your right foot flat against your left inner thigh and extend your arms over your head with your palms together.
Helpful Acupressure point:
Location: With palm facing up, on the inside of the wrist, on the little finger side of the crease where the hand meets the wrist. Massage for 60 seconds at least 3 times a day.
Function: Promotes a calm mind, alleviates anxiety, stimulates memory, and corrects insomnia. Also useful in alleviating hysteria, sadness, fear and fright, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath.

There are so many ways to keep your memory sharp besides the old saying use it or lose it. I have found the following to be useful for my self and my patients…
- Physical exercise
Believe it or not, when you’re exercising your body, you’re exercising your mind as well. Aerobic exercise gets your blood pumping, which increases the oxygen going to your brain and lowers your risk of disorders such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease that can lead to memory loss. If you can, start with some exercise in the morning. This can clear your head right off the bat to stay focused and alert during the day. Exercises that require coordination are especially helpful for keeping the mind active such as simply throwing a ball back and forth. I have also found the Brain Gym methods very useful http://braingym.org/
2. Adequate sleep
Sleep is one of the best ways to make sure your brain and memory are in tip-top shape on a daily basis. To get the most out of your sleep, aim for 7.5-9 hours every night. Make sure to shut off the electronics at least an hour before bed to help the mind shut off as well. Try to limit your caffeine and alcohol intake earlier in the day. Both can result in a shallow sleep. Acupuncture is a great way to improve your quality and quantity of sleep. Here is a link to one such study http://www.healthcmi.com/Acupuncture-Continuing-Education-News/1550-acupuncture-relieves-insomnia-and-extends-sleep
3. Keep your brain stimulated
Research has shown that keeping mental stimulation as we age is very important for lowering the risk of dementia. Stay social, interact with others, learn new skills, play mind-exercise games like crossword puzzles or Sudoku. Interacting with others and continuing to learn is vital for keeping the brain healthy at any age.
4. Decrease stress
Chronic stress can not only make someone miserable, but also cause serious long term effects. Stress over time has been shown to destroy brain cells and damage the area of the brain that creates new memories and recalls past ones. To avoid memory loss, minimize your stress. Don’t take on too many tasks if they overwhelm you, sometimes it is okay to say no. Make sure you have outlets to relieve stress whether it is physical exercise or talking with someone about your frustrations. Acupuncture has a profound effect on relieving stress and helping you keep that “zen” feeling all day long. 5. Superfoods and herbs are super important
Certain superfoods have shown to be significant in preventing memory loss. Make sure to get your 8-10 fruit and vegetable servings in, many are filled with antioxidants that help protect your brain cells. Eat more foods with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna and foods cooked with olive oil. Some of my favorite herbs and foods for improving memory and cognition are: ginkgo biloba, ginseng, gotu kola, green tea, rosemary, goji berrries, bacopa and periwinkle.
The mother of all antioxidants is GLUTATHIONE and is only made by our body, not consumed in our diet. To help your body make more glutathione, try consuming avocados, asparagus, broccoli, garlic, raw eggs, spinach, tomatoes, and tumeric. Another sure fire way to boost glutathione by over 500% is by consuming 2 ounces twice a day of Asea~ the redox signaling drink. It is a scientific breakthrough that is improving peoples health all over the globe…including my own! I have been consuming Asea and its partner the topical gel called Renu 28 for almost 3 months now. So far I have noticed: 90 % decrease in eye floaters, 90% reduction in muscle & joint pain from a tick borne illness, better sleep, 95% improvement in energy levels, eczema is gone, palpitations are 98% gone, scars are disappearing, wrinkles and cellulite are disappearing, circulation has improved 90%, endurance and stamina has increased 85%, mood is balanced, menses are 90% less painful, memory is better, cognition is better, allergies are less, dry skin is much less, digestion is better, my hair and nails are growing twice as fast and gallbladder pain is less. This stuff is amazing!
There are over 100 ailments associated with low glutathione levels such as: ADD, Aging, ALS, Alzheimer’s, Autism, CFS, Diabetes, MS, Neurodegenerative disorders and trauma.
Increase your energy, strengthen your immune system, increase your mental focus and clarity, decrease your muscle/joint discomfort and improve your athletic performance with GLUTATHIONE.

Have you ever wished upon a star to turn back the hands of time? To erase visible and unseen signs of aging? To wake up feeling and looking like a kid again?
Our cells are damaged on a daily basis from stress, diet, exercise, the sun, etc and when we are young our cells repair quickly but as we age our bodies ability to rebuild diminishes.
There is a link between health, aging and Redox Signaling molecules: without a constant, balanced supply of these vital molecules, we grow old, we grow weak, and we grow more prone to health problems.
After 2 decades of research and millions of dollars…science has the answer, thanks to Dr. Gary Samuelson. It is now possible to supplement our bodies with Redox Signaling molecules in a drink called ASEA and a topical gel called RENU 28. It is the fountain of youth you have been searching for.
Studies demonstrate that the most potent natural antioxidants that exist in cells—glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD)—are more 500% more effective when supplemented with ASEA.
A clinical trial conducted by David C. Nieman, DrPH, suggest that ASEA Redox Supplement may help reduce oxidative stress and support cardiovascular health.
Tests conducted on athletes have also yielded very impressive results. Over half of the athletes experienced an increase in the time it takes to hit the runner’s wall by an average of 12% (rare in athletes).
Skin Cell Renewal 16%
Skin Texture 22%
Skin Smoothness 23%
Skin Elasticity 20%
Appearance of Cellulite 16%
•Everyone can benefit from ASEA
•ASEA has powerful anti-aging benefits
•Studies show the benefits of ASEA for athletes
•Immune system benefits are great for families and health-minded individuals

The Heart According to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the heart can be considered the most important organ in the body. All other organs connect to the heart and help the heart function as best it can. According to TCM, regulated blood circulation depends on the heart’s energy flow, or Qi. When the heart does not have enough Qi and is deficient in Yang, it can result in poor blood circulation, weak pulse, palpitations and chest pain.
A Heart Yang deficiency is associated with coldness. When Yang is not in balance, circulation slows resulting in extreme coldness and a pale face. A Yin deficiency happens when one is overworked and does not give the body and mind a chance to slow down. Fatigue and anxiety are symptoms of a Yin imbalance.
Imbalances in the heart can result in many other issues as well. When one is stressed, a domino effect happens in the body. The liver’s function decreases when the body is in high stress, therefore it cannot support the heart.
According to TCM, the heart is also the source of consciousness and thinking. When one’s blood circulation is in balance, their thought processes and mental activities function well. If the heart’s energy is deficient, one can experience anxiety, insomnia and restlessness.
TCM believes that acupuncture treatment can reduce stress and return the heart to health. When one is consistently stressed, there is an increased level in adrenaline and cortisol due to a raised blood pressure. When these stress hormones increase in the body, one is more susceptible to blood clots and a risk of heart attack.
Acupuncture works by lowering the body’s blood pressure and heart rate, which then can lower cortisol and adrenaline levels. Specific acupuncture points are used on the body to relax the mind and address problems like hypertension and symptoms of heart disease.
Acupuncture works by addressing the body as a whole. When there is an imbalance in the heart, acupuncture points work to return the body back to its normal energy flow, which improves the function of the organs.
6 Healthy Foods for the Heart
Changing the way you eat is one of the best ways to improve heart health. By making an active choice to improve your lifestyle, you can see your heart health improve greatly as well. Below are superfoods to incorporate into your diet.
Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help decrease the risk of an irregular heartbeat, lower plaque build-up in the arteries and decrease triglycerides, the main type of fat in our bodies. It is recommended by the American Heart Association to eat salmon or other fatty fish at least twice a week.
Believe it or not, potatoes can be very beneficial for heart health. Potatoes are packed with potassium and fiber, which can help lower blood pressure and risk for heart disease. As long as they are not fried, potatoes can be a great food option unless you have arthritis and then I would avoid all nightshade foods.
You can’t go wrong with nuts. Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts and macadamia nuts are rich with fiber and vitamin E, which helps lower cholesterol. Don’t be skeptical by the high fat content of nuts, those who eat nuts regularly have been shown to be leaner than those who don’t. Walnuts among other nuts also contain high amount of omega-3 fatty acids.
There are many benefits to vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and kale. These vegetables can especially help your heart because of the high amounts of vitamins, minerals and carotenoids, which act as an antioxidant. Including green vegetables into your diet every day not only can improve overall health but give the heart a boost.
Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats that can help lower the risk of heart disease and help control cholesterol levels. This fruit is also rich in antioxidants and potassium, making it a superfood that can be easily incorporated into meals.
Oatmeal is not only practical and affordable, but high in soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. Choose oatmeal or plain oats with no added sugar. Make sure to be especially careful with instant oatmeal, which a lot of times contains added ingredients.

Acupuncture and Prostate Health
Whether you are looking to reduce your risk of prostate disease or treat an existing condition, acupuncture may be able to help. Because of its holistic approach, acupuncture can help relieve symptoms associated with prostate problems like frequent and painful urination.
A report titled Traditional Chinese Medicine and Prostate Health published by Pacific College found Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to be effective in the treatment of prostatitis, urinary tract infections, and symptoms associated with prostate cancer supportive care.
There have been multiple studies that have proven acupuncture helpful. A Chinese study published in 2008 found that electroacupuncture, a form of acupuncture, had a 96.4 percent rate of effectiveness for treatment.
In modern practice of acupuncture, each patient is assessed and given a treatment plan to reduce their symptoms. Acupuncture accomplishes this by addressing the body as a whole and using acupuncture points to stimulate meridians that then return the body to balance and natural flow.
The principle behind this practice is that our bodies have a natural energy flowing through them at all times. When our body’s energies become stuck or stagnant, our bodies are susceptible to disease and illness, including prostate cancer and prostatitis.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among men in the United States with around 290,000 new cases diagnosed each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you are at risk or currently dealing with prostate cancer or prostatitis, you are not alone.
Consider acupuncture as an alternative, safe treatment to reduce symptoms associated with prostate problems and restore your body to better health.
Give me a call today to give your body the treatment it deserves.
